The Truth About Granola Bars

Granola Bars are busy person’s go to snack. We’ve all had days where we’ve had to skip a meal.  On days like these, granola bars seem to be the best hunger fix because  they are yummy, small, and “nutritious.”

No, granola bars are not the worst snack, but they are definitely not the healthiest. Granola bars usually contain unhealthy ingredients such as sugary syrup, and other products often found in candy bars.

To help avoid the more unhealthy granola bars, read the ingredient labels before eating them. According to, granola bars that are higher in fiber (2 grams or more) provide more energy, and are most likely to make you feel like you are full in a faster amount of time. Also, stay away from granola bars that are high in hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and refined sugar. Lastly, avoid granola bars that contain artificial flavors and colors.

Cheat of the Week

I recently went to Big Dipper, an ice-cream shop in Dunkirk. The shop is a 20-minute walk from campus, and is well worth the time and energy to get there. While there I ordered cookies and cream on a medium waffle cone; It was delicious, to say the least! The ice cream is homemade, and made at the store, as its website states proudly. Read more here:

I highly recommend going to Big Dipper with a group of friends if you are craving something sweet and yummy. There are a wide variety of options to choose from…Ice cream, milkshake, sundae galore!

Since finals are fast approaching, take some time from your day to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Cheat of the Week

Tired of campus food? Well, you’re not alone. It’s nearly the end of the semester, and I’ve heard many students complain about the food options on campus. Many are simply craving warm home-cooked meals.

Yesterday was my friend’s birthday, so we decided it would be a great opportunity to eat out. So, three of us took the campus bus over to El Azteca, a Mexican restaurant in Dunkirk. I had been wanting to go to this restaurant for the longest, and certainly was not disappointed by the food, or the service.

No, Mexican food is probably not the most healthy for you, but it’s too delicious not to try just once. I ordered a dish called Fajitas Tejanas which included sliced beef, chicken, shrimp, peppers, onions and tomatoes. The dish was also served with Spanish rice, guacamole, salad, tortillas, and refried beans.

If you’re going to cheat on your diet, you might as well do it at El Azteca!

Here is a link to their website, where you’ll find more pictures, and a copy of their menu:
